The food is cooked gradually over low temperature and can be very healthy and hearty depending on the type of ingredients used. Slow cookers are economical: they are perfect for those (inexpensive) tougher meats such as shoulder or brisket, they do not burn food, can be very tasty, and are easy to clean. There is a Boston initiative to reduce the number of plastic bags used in Massachusetts each year. Plastic bags are used at a rate of 1.5 billion a year which then end up in landfills where they take centuries to decompose. State legislatures in Massachusetts are devising a five year plan to reduce or ban the use of plastic bags, though a small group is pushing for a more expedited plan. Reusable bags are becoming popular as people gear towards a more Earth friendly and conscious society. These bags can be purchased at most of the grocery stores that offer plastic bags and can also be folded neatly when not in use.

This article explores how society is changing its views on the elderly. “With Clint Eastwood directing films at 80 and Betty White starring in a new sitcom at 88, the pressure for 70-year-olds is not to face mortality, but to kick up those slightly arthritic heels ever higher.”
Says Dr. Basting, “The eight decade is now seen as an active time of life: you’re just past retirement, that’s your time to explore and play mentally.” Society will have to redefine its views on the elderly. More and more of the elderly are staying involved and staying healthy. Age is no longer a factor in determining the activities they choose and society should no longer stereotype what the elderly are capable of.

“The cost of child and senior care for American families is a staggering $600 billion annually. On top of that, companies are losing an estimated $34 billion each year due to declines in employee productivity related to caregiving responsibilities. In March 2010, major corporations and caregiving organizations will come together to address the challenges presented by child and senior care. Through a series of interactive sessions, these institutions will create a blueprint of how to provide employees a caregiving support structure they need and want.”
